How to Avoid Scam Emails!

I've written a few articles on scam emails that have helped people stave off fraudulent offers. They all focus around the same idea for avoiding scam emails, which is...

Not sure if an email is legit? Google it!!!

Googling the sender's email address, or a snippet of the conversation, will bring you to pages like these, where multiple people have confirmed an email as a scam.

On that note, never trust emails from unknown senders. Think about it; why would someone, a complete stranger you've never met or given your email address, be interested in giving you money, scholarships, or work?

Where things get tricky, is when you get a LinkedIn user involved. I have been contacted by people through LinkedIn who were recruiters for a company seeking hires for another. That sort of thing is becoming more commonplace. It is hard to categorize them all to 'scam' or 'not a scam' as either could happen. For the most part, they will be legitimate inquiries from recruiters (it is their job to seek out good fits for businesses).

However , make sure you can communicate with that person *through* LinkedIn, as the email sender could be claiming the identity of a given member on LinkedIn.

All these are good tips to follow, but they all boil down to one habit: Googling

Ditch the Melatonin Pills for a Better Night's Rest

If you're in the same boat, give yourself a "relaxation period" at the end of the day before going to bed. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to give yourself to slow down and prepare yourself for sleep. This will aid in the natural process of melatonin secretion in your brain. Try dimming the lights, taking a break from the TV or computer, and giving yourself time to meditate or think deep. A warm bubble bath is a great accompaniment to it all.

Off and on I have tried melatonin pills as means of circumventing the effects of caffeine intake late in the day or evening. Recently, they have been giving me headaches, making me exhausted and tired during the day, and overall, been detrimental on my mood, mentally and physically.

I already know a better way to get a good night's sleep - go for a run during the day, or do some exercise whatever it may be. Eat healthy meals 3 times a day and avoid caffeine and soft drinks.

But I can't do that. It is so intertwined with my daily cycle that Im not sure I could break it even if I tried.

So, I will do my best to "have it all" without using the Melatonin pills.

What is important here is that you're giving your body time to de-stress. If you go straight to bed, you still carry all the stress from today into tomorrow. Giving yourself time to process things, and come to solutions and ideas, will give you less stress the next day. Try it out!

Amazon Software Engineer Intern Interview : What To Expect

Interview length: Two 45 minute back-to-back interviews
Preparation given: The evening before, the morning of

I had an on-campus interview with Amazon yesterday. The recruiters live up to their reputation. The interview felt more like a test rather than a standard "why do you want to work for us, what will you bring us" questionnaire. I spent the day before brushing up on terminology and reading other peoples' stories on how their interviews went. Every interviewee signs a non-disclosure form so I cannot share the questions that I was given, but I can say a few things about the process to help you.

First, you need to brush up on your knowledge of com sci courses- everything ranging from digital logic, discrete mathematics, to data structures. These are all areas that they want to test their future hires to make sure they understand. You  don't need to know every single data structure out there, but avoid the mistake that I made; for some reason, I went into the interview thinking "data structures" referred to the data structure defined in Java. Data structures refer to any models that handle data; i.e. Sets, Trees, Maps, Queues, etc.

Second, know algorithms and how they work. Runtimes and Big O notation are very important to know. You will more than likely be tested on your knowledge of these. I perceive Amazon to be a company seeking out the best time-constraint algorithms out there, so naturally, they want to know if you can solve problems with algorithms that run fast.

There are a few areas of error that I should have been more careful on , but I wasnt. Namely, the second interviewer gave me the same code question to solve as the first interviewer. Not thinking, I said, easy, you do it like this. Im sure that will come back to haunt me as I am not given an offer! I wasn't sure if it was some sort of test by asking it again or not- you'd think they would have coordinated who would ask what questions.

The 45 minute interviews go by pretty fast. Sooner than expected, the interviewer will say that time is up, and you will either move to your second interviewer, or finish for the day.

The interviewers are not like normal interviewers, in the sense that they dont care so much who you are as to what you know. During the interviews, they want answers. You either answer correctly or you dont. They helped me to an extent in areas that I had forgotten some of the terminology with- but Im sure that reflected negatively in my review. When you give an answer- make sure you know it works. They will not hesitate to dissect your answer to make sure you fully understand what you are talking about.

For example, if you write an algorithm that checks if the parameter int is an even integer greater than 0, remember to ask yourself these questions:
What are different ways to test this method? Different values for the parameter? How does the algorithm handle them?
Is this the simplest way to solve the problem? What alternative implementations could be done and how do they compare in efficiency?
Another thing to note is, you will be coding under pressure. You will be asked to give solutions to problems on the spot, whether you visualize and repeat orally, or write it down on paper. What really irked me was the fact that no time limit was specified or general amount of time to spend on it. I guess they assume everyone to have a solution within minutes of starting. Then again, the problems are not too challenging, so you shouldn't have to take any longer to figure them out.

My advice: Treat this interview like a midterm exam. Starting to prepare for it the night is a bad idea. Do as many simple algorithm questions as you can - writing code to solve problems. Write the code out or try and visualize it, as you are expected to do one or the other during the interviews. Personally, Ive never been a visualizer with code. They dont mind if you chose one item over the other. There are a ton of websites out there where you can do test problems (e.x. www.codingbat.com ) , and even more sites that offer problems with solutions.

After the interview: When "interview mode" was off on the interviewers, they were very friendly individuals. Not to say they werent during the interview, but there was a clear change in behavior from professional to relaxed and casual. In discussing their own experiences, they only had raving things to say about Amazon. They give you time to ask questions about the company. If you feel comfortable with the interview thus far, ask some general questions, like "What type of work do interns normally do over the summer?" or "what made you choose to work for Amazon?" and "Have you ever interned with Amazon?"

College Survival Guide: Things to know BEFORE coming to College

  • Don’t get a huge meal plan or too many Dining Dollars. If you don’t use them up, you lose them.
  • Don't park on campus between 7:00am and 5:30pm. You'll get ticketed unless you park in meter parking (which ranges between 30 mins to 2 hours)
  • Time management skills are very important! Don’t get too far behind in your homework.
  • As a freshman, don't go out to campustown too late on Fridays or Saturdays, unless you would like to deal with drunk people.
  • Tuition rises every year, so be expecting an annual increase.
  • Lanyards are not as cool as you think they are. It says "Look at me, I am a freshman"

Iowa State University Terminology:

  • Business Majors - Usually looked down on by engineers due to the greater difficulty of engineering courses at Iowa State.
  • Bar Fights - a marching band term for the tradition of going to the campustown bars on Friday of Homecoming week to play the fight song.
  • Campanile: The bell tower located in central campus.
  • Campaniling: Campaniling is an ISU tradition. A student is not an official Iowa Stater until he or she is kissed under the Campanile at midnight.
  • Campustown: Strip of bars, shops, and restaurants that runs along Welch Avenue, just south of campus and Friley Hall. Extends from Hayward to Stanton.
  • Central Campus: Can refer to any between Pearson and Curtis Hall
  • C-Stores: Short for convenience stores, the C-Stores are located in the commons areas of the major dorm complexes on campus: Willow-Larch, Friley, and Towers.
  • The Daily: Short for the Iowa State Daily, which is the campus newspaper.

  • The Hub: Originally built to fulfill the University’s need for a bookstore, post office, and waiting room for the Ames and College Railway, the Hub was built in 1892. It has moved from its original location and is now located just south of Parks Library and west of Morrill Hall. The Hub now serves as a multi-purpose building for students to utilize.
  • ISUCF"V"MB - Iowa State University Cyclone Football "Varsity" Marching Band
  • Just Sayin - A portion of the Daily that has spread to Facebook groups and its own website. Serves as a way to call people out on stupid / funny / cool things.
  • Learning Communities: Small groups of students who have similar areas of study. Usually, they have anywhere from one to three classes together and may live in the same residence hall.

  • Overhead at ISU: The sister of Just Sayin' - where people post snippets of conversations they heard. Usually containing sexual innuendo.
  • Parks - Refers to Parks Library on campus.
  • Towers: Towers is the common collective term for the dorms Wallace and Wilson, located on the far south end of campus, just behind Campustown.
  • Veishea: Veishea is an acronym for the seven colleges that were part of Iowa State University in 1922: veterinary medicine, engineering, industrial science, home economics, and agriculture.

Here is a campus map a little better defined:

Iowa State Parking Map:

Note that: these are parking spots that are reserved from 7:00am to 5:30pm ... so dont park there during those hours M-F.

Tickets range from $10, $15, $25. I think the worst ticket I saw was $35. They add up fast. I had $100 in fines from last semester.

Why Isn't my Blog getting any Hits ? Views? Comments? Likes?

The tirade of blogs out there all have one goal in mind; getting hits. Some do, many don't. Here are some tips to help boost your hits:

  1. Have an attractive website. Nothing is more offputting than an ugly distorted website. If your site design is garbage, your content is probably garbage too.
    FIX: Download templates
  2. Allow interaction and social networking. People like to be the ones to be informed. Sharing cool and new things on Facebook gives them that aura of independence and intelligence. Sure it is your information, but they found it and shared it. So give them the ability to do so. And make it easy. Each blog post should have Like/1+/Tweet this, and other social networks if you so choose to engage. But those are the top 3. Maybe add reddit in there too.
  3. Promote social interactions on your site. That means, allow anonymous comments, delete spam, and reply to user comments. Nothing appeals less to a site visitor than a blog without any social interaction. It tells them that the blog is not very known, popular, important, or relevant to the data or information they are seeking.
  4. Search keywords. For examples of how to name your blogs, try searching the topic that you're writing on in google. You will get a list of similar search items as you type. Copy those to your blog post. Those are previous searches and popular ones. Alternatively, use keyword research https://adwords.google.com
  5. Dont be fooled by spambots (referral spam). They will hit your blog to get you to visit their site. Does not represent an actual person.
  6. DONT CLICK YOUR ADS. If you want to lose your ad privileges altogether, click them. Google has been around the block with cheaters and fake clicks. They can easily spot fake clicks. So don't try and outsmart your ads provider; it is a losing battle. On the same note, you can probably get away with your friends clicking your ads, but again, Google has excellent detection methods for fraud clicks. Play it safe and play it legit, dont click them.
  7. If you accidentally click an ad, it will usually be 'forgiven' and not counted. It has happened to me, the click has $0.00 payout. Just be careful not to keep doing it, otherwise google will think youre trying to cheat.

Monster & Motivation

I went over to the local Walmart, not looking for anything particular, and got myself a 10 pack of Monster energy for about $15. For $1.50 a monster, instead of $2, it wasn't too bad of a deal.

Especially not a bad deal, considering the benefits I've gained from it. Im not here to endorse Monster, but from personal experience, it sets a driving force in you that is sometimes lost with week in and week out of workloads. For the last 5 hours, I have been programming, with one goal in mind; completing what I started. Am I freaking out about not finishing ? No. Am I worried I'll fall asleep? Definitely not...

The big players in energy drinks are the surge of B vitamins, Ginseng, Taurine, and high amounts of caffeine. All these stimulants combined gives you an alertness equivalent to a few cups of coffee. Considering the high dosage of stimulants, you shouldn't drink more than one in an hour, or more than 2 in a day. You might have some heart complications should you choose to do otherwise. It is also a bad idea mixing with alcohol- although we all love Jager bombs. Mixing stimulants with depressants is a badddd idea. Especially caffeine-  mixed with alcohol will often result in a loss of memory of the previous night.

Anyway...back to the grind.

How a Programmer's browser looks after a programming session

This is quite an understatement, too.

Border Searches Laptops or Computers

In the United States , border patrol does not have to hold a warrant to inspect a computer traveling across the border. They can request to view the computer, in which they will browse for any criminal content. This is in order to prevent persons from bringing drugs, contraband, or illegal aliens into or out of the country.

They will analyze not only your files, but your internet caches as well. Temporary Internet files and web history. If you are speculative to the truth in this, look upthe court case of Stuart Romm in 2006. Let it be known, I have no sympathy for what happened to Romm.

So... if you're ever traveling across borders and have stuff to hide from the police. You might want to delete your temporary internet files.

Devdef.com does not represent real traffic on Blogger Stats

If you are a blogger owner then you've probably been subject to http://www.devdef.com hits to your blog, even as early as days after creating a new blog. You are curious as to who is linking to your blog, so you visit the site only to be presented with a stupid video or get rich quick scheme.

The numbers reflected in our Stats logs do not represent any actual traffic against our blogs, or any websites with links to our blogs. The only person who benefits from referer spam is the owner of the advertised (fake referer URL) sites - and that happens only when we click on the links in the Stats display.

Only Stats, which builds its pageview counts and graphs
using the Blogger server activity logs, is subject to referer spam. All third party visitor logs and meters, which depend upon snippets or widgets added to the blog template, are not subject to this problem.

What you can do:
1. Don't click on the links.
2. Get a third party visitor log / meter, for accurate and comprehensive pageview counts.

Here are two great alternatives to Stats:

1.
www.revolvermaps.com - Get a spinning globe that shows real-time hits and overall hits (like the one you see on the right panel of this website!)

2. http://whos.amung.us/ - Get a counter that shows up on your website for all users, who can click on it to navigate to the stats website to see more in-depth statistics. You can pay for upgraded services and additional statistics (but free works great too!)
